Forensic Art and Illustration

The Quintessential Forensic Art Textbook
Karen Taylor has succeeded with a seemingly impossible task. She has written the quintessential forensic art book that sets the standard for the discipline and for all future textbooks to come. My guess is that we will be deep into this century before there is another forensic art book of this professional caliber. Until now, the few so called forensic art books for sale were "vanity books." If they had any instructional value it ranged from none to very little. This is assuming they could be found because most were published by the authors. Taylor's book has well over 500 pages of illustrations and information that will be very helpful to the beginner as well as the veteran artist. There is so much pertinent material one wonders how Taylor kept it all in such logical order. Suffice to say there seems to be little, if anything, that Karen Taylor has left out. It has been meticulously researched, organized, referenced and indexed. FA & I is a must for any serious forensic artist but I think it can also prove to be a great aid for criminal lawyers, police departments, colleges (with criminal justice courses) and may even be helpful to some research psychologists. In my opinion, we will not see another forensic art textbook of this high professional quality in our lifetime, that is, unless Karen Taylor writes it. Kudos Karen.

A MASTERPIECE
Finally, the definitive forensic art text has been written. Masterfully crafted, Karen T. Taylor's book, Forensic Art and Illustration is destined to become the canon of this genre.

From the history of forensic art to courtroom demeanor, this book reads as though you are sitting next to Ms. Taylor and she has decided to reveal the secrets of the forensic art universe over a cup of tea. She does it all: composite art, two-dimensional and three-dimensional facial reconstruction, postmortem drawings, superimposition and age progression. All of these techniques are related in concise, descriptive terminology that is accompanied by spectacular graphics. Karen T. Taylor's professional and ethical approach to an artist's role in an investigation is the embodiment of perfection.

This book encompasses the collective consciousness of the forensic art world, creating an encyclopedia for the artist and non-artist alike. Generations to come will study this text, and no artist will be able to claim he or she is properly trained without having studied with Karen or from her book. Forensic Art and Illustration is seamless and brilliant.

Review of Forensic Art and Illustration by Karen T. Taylor
This book is unique, in that it successfully combines a step-by-step approach to the techniques of 2- and 3-dimensional forensic facial reconstruction with essential information on the legal issues of concern to those who do this work. Among many other important subjects it covers are computerized aging programs, composite imagery, superimposition, graphics reproduction, interviewing techniques for the artist, advice on dealing with the news media and testifying in court plus the history of forensic art techniques. It has become an important reference book for many forensic reconstruction laboratories around the country. It is truly comprehensive and eminently suitable as an academic textbook in art, forensic anthropology and law-and-justice university courses. For those university programs that provide a concentration or major in forensic sciences, it would be an excellent resource for interdisciplinary, team-taught courses. I plan to recommend it for adoption at Rowan University for just such a program.

Friendly Enemies
Published in Paperback by PublishAmerica (January, 2003)
Author: Victoria Taylor Murray

Midwest Book Review - this author has me hooked
Friendly Enemies picks up where Forbidden left off. Homicide Detective Gabe Baldwin is still protecting Nouri Sommers from someone who wants her dead. Despite his growing love for Nouri, Gabe is still fighting what he considers "forbidden fruit" - giving in to his desire for a woman loved by his best friend. The disappearance of her husband, murders at Lambert, and knowing she has been betrayed by husband, friends, and lovers takes a harsh toll on Nouri. She's beginning to see a pattern to her life and does not necessarily like what she sees. The author does a good job of portraying Nouri's crisis of understanding.

Her wealthy perverted husband is still missing. From all evidence, his wealth has been ill-gotten by associating with evil men around the world. Her best friend is plotting with a vicious killer to end Nouri's life. The man she thought was the love of her life - Clint Chamberlain - is cavorting with a sexy beauty in France despite his recent protestations of undying love and promises to stop playing the field. And the man she is beginning to love refuses to make love with her out of loyalty to his friend and fear that she will break his heart. It's a frightening and frustrating time for Nouri.

A few more loose ends are connected in Book Three of the Lambert Series. Nouri inches closer to what may possibly be genuine love. The devoted men in her life tolerate each other as "friendly enemies" to safeguard Nouri and her fortune. And readers are left wondering what the clincher will be in the final chapter, Le Fin. Until then, Ms. Murray keeps us all hanging, waiting for answers and wondering at the outcome. Friendly Enemies is recommended for mature readers due to sexual situations.

"A Real Character Connection"
By the time the reader reaches the third book in this writer's Lambert series (Friendly Enemies) the fun story line and sharp character development have been so vividly described at this point the reader actually begins to feel a real connection to the heroine almost as though the reader is now a real part of the story! I love this series!

LOVING IT!
I am so loving this writer's Lambert series! What fun I am having trying to connect the dots and piece things together from book-to-book. If it isn't one thing then it is another to keep the reader guessing chapter after chapter. Something to please everyone is contained in this fun series! If you haven't had a chance to check one of Ms. Murray's books out "Friendly Enemies" is a great book to start with! Loved it!

MORE PLEASE!!!
I do not want this series to end! I really love the Lambert series and would love for it to go on for another few books. The island where every wish is granted and every dreamed fulfilled has stolen my heart and I don't want it to be over yet. My four trips to the pretend island paradise of Lambert is the best vacation I have had the chance to go on in years! PLEASE BRING IT BACK TO LIFE AGAIN SOON!!! Fans like me need books like Ms. Murray's Lambert series to get me through the days and even sometimes through the nights.

What a way to end a series!
Wow! I could not believe the way the Lambert series ended! I am like most of the readers that have posted a review of this series and I completely agree with them, I was shocked at the ending! I would have never dreamed - not in a zillion years - to where the final visit to this writer's island paradise would take me, or maybe I should say take Gabe and Nouri!!! I too would like for Ms. Murray to take this series a step or three farther!!! I have become such a Lambert Lover! If you have not taken the time to read this fantasy series you owe yourself the pleasure! Fun fantasy!

Satisfication Guaranteed!
Get cozy, pour yourself a nice cup of hot tea, or a glass of your favorite wine, and get ready to be thoroughly entertained! Start this book early because I guarantee you won't want to put it down until after you have finished the last satisfying page. Le Fin, the ending book in the Lambert series was anything but boring or predictable, an ending I never expected or was prepared for, an ending that I am still thinking about, an ending that left me wanting more of this writer's fantasy series. Too bad it has come to an end. I will miss Ms. Murray's colorful cast of Lambert characters!

THE POWER BROKERS
The Power Brokers is the best book I have read in a longtime. I like the way the author introduces her characters. I immediately became enchanted with the main charater, Dominic Falcone. I felt as though I was on a rollercoaster ride as I followed his life, his career, his loves and his problems throughout his life. I can't wait to read her next book.

THE POWER BROKERS IS UNIQUE, FRESH AND EXCITING!
Fiction is not my favorite choice of literature, however, I found this book to be enlightening, informative and interesting. The writer captures you with her characters and their tangled lives, and her knowledge of different countries. I like the way she writes.

A BOOK YOU CANNOT PUT DOWN!
I am from San Diego and an Attorney and I feel like this book was written about me. I loved the storyline and the characters. I feel like they are people I know. This book would make a wonderful movie. Where can I find out more about the Author?

Dear and Glorious Physician

A human face for a Gospel writer
I read this book years ago, as a teenager struggling with my own inner demons. It was one of the few books that made me cry, there were so many beautifully crafted scenes of humanity and redemption that resonated with what I was going through at that point in my life. Luke's mixed feelings and sometimes disdain for his father echoed some of the same feelings that I had for my parents, and woken me to the shame of having such unworthy feelings. Luke's lost of faith echoed my own inner struggles for identity, my constant feelings of inadequacy and unworthiness, and my then slowly dying faith in Christianity. My favorite scene in the whole book was a little story Mary told Luke: Lucifer, the Morningstar (portrayed here as an infinitely beautiful angel whose perfection is only marred by his own pride), took a clump of soil from the earth and showed it mockingly to Jesus, indicating that everything Jesus strives for is nothing more than dirt. Jesus then took up another clump of soil, and a plant grew and blossomed in his hand. Somewhere along the way, during those difficult years, I had also come to realise that this world, this life I've been given, is full of beauty and worthy things to struggle for and cherish, if only I would open my eyes and see them. I loved this book. BUY IT if you wish to read a fictionalised but touching account of St. Luke's life.

Get insight into the life of St. Luke
This is one of my absolute favorite books. It has really given me more insight into the life of Luke, and helped me to see him as a "real" person, not just some historical figure. Read this book, and then read the book of Acts. Fascinating!

First-century Physician
Taylor Caldwell's book on Luke the physician who in his later years traveled with St. Paul and who is believed to have authored "the Gospel according to Luke" is a masterpiece. The time Ms. Caldwell spent staying in and studying the Mediterranean world as well as absorbing all the information she could find about Luke paid off. This book is absolutely fascinating -- full of action, very well researched and written so vividly as to make the reader feel that he is living right there with Luke and accompanying him on his journey through life, his search for meaning in life and his first-century A.D. world. The problems of the physician in those times weren't much different from today in terms of trying to cure disease, bring new lives into the world and help the dying to leave it with as little pain and suffering as possible. What is very interesting is how much the physicians of his time did know, knowledge which was much more than our 20th-century generations give them credit for. However, for a man who outwardly had a very successful life, the real meat of the story lies in his feelings of being unfulfilled in his work and his constant seeking and yearning for deeper meaning to his life. Where he travels, whom he meets and how he finally comes to the discovery of this meaning bring the inner man to life and give us an excellent insight into this most special physician. I could hardly put the book down and and have lent it out so much that it is falling apart! Was delighted to find a hard-cover version for my library on Amazon.com.

Captain's and the Kings

a timeless masterpiece
This book is one that truly stands the test of time. I first read it in the 70's as a teen, and it has stayed with me all these years. If you are a lover of historical fiction, appreciate bold, sweeping epochs, and are fascinated by human nature, this is a read for you. I love Taylor Caldwell's books, but beware if this is your first foray into her works, as she sees the world and people in general as very duplicitous. She can be very dark and brooding, and appears to have been a rapt conspiracy theorist judging from the introduction and the bibliograpy that appear in this book. Her characters tend to be quite black and white, but that of Joseph Armagh is quite complex and will be an endless source of fascination to the reader. Aside from the heavy handed political tones in this book, it is the saga of the Armagh family that will keep the reader engrossed. Caldwell weaves a formidible tale-one that is engaging, educational, emotional, and yes even a little frightening. I find myself wondering at the conclusion of this book: What if, in fact, we truly are at the mercy of the "deadly quiet men"? This book will entertain you and make you think!

Entertaining Historical Fiction
There are two sides to this book, one is typical of the romantic pulp fiction style of the 70's, this is first the life story of Joseph Armagh, a destitute orphan who emigrated from Ireland because of the famine. His bitter experiences in childhood leave him cold hearted and in pursuit of money at all costs, and he achieves incredible wealth and power in America. His goal at any price is to make his son president of the United States. There was a made for TV mini series based on this story.

The other more interesting part of this book though is about the control of wealth and real power in the world in the hands of a few. Taylor Caldwell has written an add on to the story that is a warning that the "controllers" are not fiction and were more powerful than ever. In the Captains and the Kings some historical events described are the US civil war, the presidencies of Lincoln, labor struggles, the making of Teddy Roosevelt, and immigration. Was the civil war after all just an event arranged & set up mainly by rich European bankers for profit? Are all wars always set up by a handful of distant people for profit? This book really makes you wonder

A "Desert Island" book
If I were marooned on a desert island, I would have to have this book with me! I read it in the 70s and have also enjoyed the mini-series many times over which starred the late Richard Jordan as Joseph Armagh. While it would be easy to draw parallels with the fictional Armagh family and the Kennedy dynasty, I prefer to think of the book as a testament to one Irish immigrant who found and then lost the American dream. The more disturbing aspect of the book (and one I always think of when a major news event takes place) is the presumption by the author that there are powerful men with money who control much of the destiny we call history. Do these men exist? Who can say? A riveting book and one worth more than one read.

A story you will definately get in to!
Forbidden, is the next book in the Lambert series. It is also a book that pulled me in to this romantic suspense series for the longhaul. It has everything a reader like myself enjoys in it, action, romance, and mystery. I can't wait for the next book (Friendly Enemies) in this series to arrive.

One week in the life of...
Some week in the life of Nouri Sommers, I must say! Some people get all the luck, I might add! Oh, I love this series!!! I was drawn into this writers continuous storyline with the first book of this series and now after reading the second book, I'm hopelessly hooked! Can't wait to get my hands on book three!!! I love Nouri and Clint and Charles and Gabe, and... shoot, I love all the fun characters in this great story!

"Lambert Fan" From Bulgaria
I thought Ms. Murray did a nice job on this book, the second in The Lambert Series. I definitely feel this sassy series has potential and I look forward to the next in the series. Forbidden prepares the reader for new characters to soon enter the comples storylines connecting the last two books of The Lambert Series. I can hardy wait!

All of a Kind Family
Published in Hardcover by Taylor Productions (September, 1994)
Authors: Sydney Taylor and Helen John
Average review score:

Engaging story of close-knit Jewish family, in 1912 NY.
I read this series multiple times as a secular Jew growing up in Queens in the late 1950s, and loved them for their "Jewishness" and their inclusion of cultural details missing from most of the many books I read. I also loved the depiction of the sisters, as we were also a family of girls - each sister was distinct and treasured. I was eager to share these books with my own daughter, and we read this one together about six months ago, when she was just-turned-six. She adored it, and kept asking for "just one more" chapter. A couple of months later, she spotted the book in a bookstore, grabbed it, and clutched it to her chest. "But we've already read that one. Don't you want to pick something else?" "No, I *love* this book. I have to *have* it!" I was thrilled - this was the first time she actually coveted book-ownership, and am now shopping for the other books in the series, now out-of-print. One caveat - although the book deals beautifully with Jewish immigrant life on the Lower East Side, it also contains stereotyped references to other ethnic groups that were current when it was written. For example, non-Jewish "good" characters tend to be tall, thin, and (yes!) blond, and there are offensive descriptions of Poles and Italians. I found myself editing while reading (and still felt it necessary to discuss stereotypes and prejudice) - you might want to initiate a conversation with your child before or during the reading of this book. Enjoy!

Why are the sequels out of print?
I first read this book when I was eight years old, and I loved it so much I went to the library and checked out the sequels. As other readers mentioned, not only are these books interesting and fun to read (I still enjoy reading them at age 37) but Christians can get a glimpse of what the Jewish religion is really like on a day-by-day basis. Other than Hanukah and Passover, school kids aren't really taught much about the other Jewish holidays. I remember in fourth grade, a Jewish girl in my class brought in Hamentaschen pastries, and I normally wouldn't have tried something with prunes in it - but because I had read about Purim in "All of a Kind Family", I discovered a wonderful treat!

I should also say that the illustrations in the books are terrific! Esp in the later books, little Charlie is so cute.

Hopefully the publisher or whoever owns the copyright to Ms. Taylor's books will read the reviews here on Amazon and re-release the entire series, as it deserves to be done. (I seem to recall the paperbacks were available in a gift box in the 70's).

One of the happiest of my childhood memories
I read this book when I was five years old. I was in London, England, where I was born and lived until we moved to Canada a year later. There I was a black, Catholic, British child reading about this wonderful Jewish-American family living in New York in another time. I didn't know any Jewish people at the time so I found the story fascinating. It was especially meaningful because we had just had our own long-awaited baby brother. The years went by and I always kept a special place in my heart for the book, but I forgot the title! Then one day I was talking to some people about childhood and I mentioned this book that I had read and loved but didn't know what the title was. Someone said, "oh, I know that book. It's called All of a Kind Family". I contacted a book search company and bought a copy. The feeling of opening the package and seeing the cover with those little girls in their striped pinafores after so many years was indescribable. Even though the book meant so much to me, I gave my copy to the daughter of a friend. I felt that I had to pass the gift of this book to another generation. I would recommend this book to anyone, of any age.

Creating Cool HTML 4 Web Pages
Published in Paperback by Hungry Minds, Inc (March, 1998)
Authors: Dave Taylor and IDG Books
Average review score:

Well done, easy to read, good level of detail.
Got a really cool site up and running in three days. As an HTML returnie and a professional programmer I wanted a book with lots of code examples, pictures and very few words. This book goes down smooth in just a few days, gets right to the point and is oriented toward accomplishing something immediately. Not a comprehensive HTML reference rather one of the rare breed of technical books that doesn't make you want to blow your brains out with overkill. Excellent use of summary tables at the end of each chapter.

Great beginning to intermediate HTML guide!
For web enthusiasts looking for a great beginning/intermediate book on HTML and webpage authoring, this is the book. I found this book not only easy to read, but also enjoyable. Using lots of exmaples and clear code, Dave discusses the internet and current technology, HTML 4 tags, cascading style sheets, java script, backgrounds, audio, dynamic HTML, registering and page maintenance, and much more. This is by far the best the best starters resource out there I have seen. Highly recommended.

My HTML scripting headaches ended, and my creativity soared.
Just about anyone can create a website with freeware/shareware HTML editors that require very little to zero knowledge of HTML. That is how I got started as well. But, take it from me, your creativity is severely limited when you design a website solely based on its appearance without ever learning how to code HTML by hand. For a while I had a difficult time to comprehend basic HTML scripting after purchasing stuffy books that solely contained a list of tags and explained by definition what each tag's purpose was. One day a friend suggested the book 'Creating Cool HTML 4 Web Pages', and from that day onward my HTML scripting headaches ended, and my creativity soared which resulted in great web sites. I definitely wish to recommend this book to novice and intermediate web designers alike.
